Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alisha Temples, owner of Fueled and Fed Nutrition, located in Alexandria, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Fueled and Fed Nutrition provides one-on-one nutrition counseling with a focus on building sustainable healthy habits. Our clients are looking for a flexible and mindful approach to healthy eating without a focus on weight loss. Many of our clients have been newly diagnosed with diabetes or a thyroid condition or battle GI issues like IBS, IBD, and ulcerative colitis and want our help figuring out how to eat to manage these conditions. We also work with endurance athletes of all levels, training for triathlons, marathons, and ultramarathons.

Tell us about yourself

I first became interested in nutrition as a high school athlete but decided not to pursue it as a career after learning about the education requirements. After college, I joined the Air Force. A few years into my first assignment, I realized my passion was really nutrition, and I pivoted to go back to school and change careers.

I started my own business after not finding a sports nutritionist in the area who focused on endurance and ultra-endurance athletes. Helping my clients navigate how to fuel a long training run or how to eat after a new diabetes diagnosis motivates me. I am so inspired by their progress and what they accomplish.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is going from a part-time solo provider to a full-time group practice. I learned so much in growing my practice, and I was able to apply much of what I learned from my time in the Air Force as a program manager to managing my team and working the backend of the business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It is hard to know what to do yourself vs. what to outsource. When starting out, I did everything myself. As my business grows, I am learning to outsource more and more. Even if it is something that I can easily do myself, it is not always the best use of my time.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find a mentor or a coach to learn from.
  2. Find other small business owners or a mastermind group to talk to. Starting a business can be lonely, especially when you're a team of 1. Finding a community is so important.
  3. Have fun with it! Starting a business can definitely be stressful and a grind, but it is also so much fun.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Take care of yourself. Starting and running a business can easily become all-consuming. Make sure you take time for yourself and your health.
