Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jim Gibson, owner of Galad Consulting LLC., located in San Francisco, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I help nonprofits and educational organizations make the best use of their technology investments. I love having that impact working with organizations that I believe in, and by helping them, I can help bring about positive changes to our world. I love having that reach/impact for good.

Tell us about yourself

I have worked in the nonprofit space for over 20 years, always in information systems/technology. I found that as much as I loved the organizations I worked with, I eventually got bored because I really love getting in and fixing problems. I love the creativity of tech problem-solving far more than maintaining existing systems.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I guess as a fairly new business, my biggest accomplishment would be starting up a business during one of the worst pandemics of the last 100 years and sticking with it.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think it is pipeline management/cash flow that is the hardest thing. As a tech consultant, I know that work well, but a whole skill set involving marketing and finance is needed to succeed.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take the time to learn about running a small business from experts in the field.
  2. There are amazing resources in many cities/states that are free and online and designed to help entrepreneurs to be successful. Seek them out.
  3. Working for yourself can be an amazing thing, but you need to find a good work/life balance and hold yourself to your own standards of delivery/performance.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

It isn’t always easy working for yourself, but it can be incredibly rewarding and worthwhile. Believe in yourself. If you believe in “your product,” others will as well
