Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Michelle Hughes, Founder of Get Your Future, located in Nottingham, United Kingdom.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run Get Your Future. A business focused on coaching students and sometimes their parents with their studies. I help them understand how to learn best, get results on their exams, and ensure they get results without too much stress. My customers range from university students struggling with their time management or not keeping on top of things to school students wasting time by focusing too much on the subjects they find the easiest. Sometimes I help parents struggling to motivate their children to study or get motivated.

Tell us about yourself

As a university lecturer, I saw many students not get the desired results. They were either working really hard and burning out or working hard but not studying well or focusing on the wrong things and losing motivation. When each year costs a student an average of £20,000, I knew some help was needed. I knew how the brain learns and could see the necessary techniques. It started with higher education, and then I translated that to secondary school education. I am currently completing an MSc in applied neuroscience which is helping my understanding further.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The student's accomplishments are my biggest accomplishment. When they write to tell me how they got on or realise they are not stupid, they just haven’t considered learning in a certain way. That feels great and, ultimately, why I do what I do.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

You make all the decisions—the hiring, firing, when, and where to launch. If you are a personal brand, you are also the face of the company, which means separating the business persona from yourself and not taking anything personally.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your core skills and outsource the rest if you can.
  2. Get yourself a cheerleader. You will need somebody to keep you going when the going gets tough.
  3. Networks are helpful. Not all your friends want to know the ins and outs of running a business.
