Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Steve Royer, owner of GI Jerky, located in Mineral Wells, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

GI Jerky is a Veteran owned and operated beef jerky company.

Tell us about yourself

I started GI Jerky in 2015 in my barracks room at Fort Bragg, NC. As part of the 82nd Airborne, all we did was train. We would spend weeks in the field at a time, and jerky was a great snack. It's high in protein and easy to pack in a rucksack. Fast forward seven years, and we love to give back to the military community by donating to various organizations as well as donating jerky to several charities that send care packages to deployed soldiers.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We are currently in 65 retail outlets across the US and hoping to be in over 100 by the end of the year.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Getting our name out in front of potential customers.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Network with other business owners.
  2. Take calculated risks.
  3. Be humble and work hard.
