Redefining Self-care - Glatzel International

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in coaching but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mara Glatzel, Founder of Glatzel International, Inc, located in North Truro, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm an intuitive coach, writer, and Needy podcast host. But really, I am a needy human who supports other needy humans in living on their own terms by honoring their needs, tending to their natural energy rhythms and cycles, and divesting from the daily impact of toxic productivity culture.

Personally and professionally, I am not even slightly interested in one size fits all "self-care" that continually misses the mark. Instead, my work is about helping perfectionists, caregivers, and people pleasers take up space in their lives and reclaim their sovereignty.

I believe that it is time to rebuild the chasm in your relationship with yourself so that you can feel seen, heard, and adored, no matter what. This is the ultimate act of self-care and is ESPECIALLY important for entrepreneurs, as your self-care and self-trust are at the core of everything you are trying to create. And I have developed a powerful framework and glittering bag of tools that will help you do just that.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a queer, femme wife and mother of two, recovering control freak, and a human who deeply understands the impulse to relegate her needs to the bottom of a long to-do list to prove her worth. My work is deeply personal because I have created what I needed 10-20 years ago in many ways. My daily effort is motivated by a core belief that our work can be impactful AND sustainable, and my mission is to support others to live more intentionally.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My first book, Needy, is being published in February 2023 by Sounds True. This summer, I am finalizing the book layout, tending to last-minute edits, and recording the audiobook -- all of which are quite literally a dream come true. Pre-orders for Needy are open wherever you purchase books if you'd like to check it out.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Decision fatigue! Woof. I try to limit the number of decisions I have to make each day but repeating some of my choices about what to wear or eat. I am exhausted by the number of aspects of my business (and life as a mother of two kids under the age of six) requiring me to sign off on them to move forward.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Set boundaries around your business to define when you are "on" and "off." Honor these boundaries like the quality of your life depends on it -- because it does.
  2. Get yourself a small group of humans who are in a similar stage of starting their business that you are. It doesn't matter if their businesses are similar -- and it might even be better if they aren't. Meet often for brainstorming, personal support, and accountability.
  3. Gain a working understanding of your needs and energy rhythms over the course of the year so that you can build this into your business planning from the start instead of waiting until you "make it" to give thought to what will enable your business to be sustainable for you.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

If I only had 10 seconds of your time, I would tell you…You are human. You have needs. You are allowed to have needs. You are allowed to meet those needs. You are allowed to advocate for your needs without fear that doing so makes you too much, not enough, or unlovable -- including and especially your relationship with yourself. That's where I come in.
