Yachting Experts - Global Yacht Concierge

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sue Gearan, Owner of Global Yacht Concierge, located in Newport, RI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My company is called GYC, and we sell private yacht charters by day and week worldwide. We specialize in New England, Florida, The Bahamas, The Caribbean, and The Mediterranean. Our clientele is anyone interested in having one of the best on-water experiences of their life.

Tell us about yourself

I started sailing with my parents when I was a teenager, and then, while attending Salem State University, I raced a bit and also worked on charter boats as a crew. At that same time, I met a lovely woman named Carol Kent, who taught me the charter business, and we worked together on and off for many years. After meeting a handsome captain, I sailed off into the sunset for 15 years. We worked together on charter catamarans, classic sailing yachts, and eventually large motor yachts. My motivation comes from seeing people go on their dream trips and helping them accomplish that in the best way possible. There's nothing better than getting a call or review after a successful charter and knowing you made a good match for the guests and the crew.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think keeping my integrity intact and remaining honest no matter what. I always give 110% regardless of what a client is spending. I also try to take time to help anyone within the industry to learn and grow. I think it's important to keep yachting in a safe, happy, and healthy environment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being accountable and responsible for other people's products and actions. As a yacht charter broker, we only have so much control over things. I do my best to vet everyone involved to ensure a pleasant experience for all. And accounting. I hate dealing with that.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Schedule your time daily, have a good business plan to start & hire out supporting roles such as an accountant, a website person, a social media expert, etc., to help with the more menial tasks.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

If anyone would like to learn more about yacht charters or have me speak about the topic to a group in person or via Zoom, please let me know. Would love to send people on this trip of a lifetime.
