Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in dentistry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mel Burchman, Co-Founder of GMA Education LLC, located in Yardley, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a laser education company that was formed 3 years ago by 3 of the top dental laser educators and clinicians in the world.

Tell us about yourself

I have been using lasers in my practice for over 25 years, and my 3 partners have very similar backgrounds. We have presented laser education all over the world. Have been published in many journals and Myself and Dr. Darbar and I are past presidents of the Academy of Laser Dentistry. Our specialty is in Photobiomodulation, and we are dedicated to teaching others about this incredible technology. Our Mission Statement is " teaching others so that they may safely and competently provide these techniques to their patients."

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

During COVID, we gave 16 virtual webinars and 4 comprehensive pieces of training in this technology. In one webinar, we have healthcare practitioners from 42 different countries. In October, we were the keynote speakers for the Asia Pacific Laser Institute annual conference, they had over 2,000 attendees. However, my biggest thrill was hosting a "Tell a med" call with a doctor in Slovenia who needed help in treating a 3-year-old patient that had brain cancer, and the accompanying chemotherapy produced severe oral mucositis. That was just an incredible way to start my day.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

We were using a platform for our webinars and website, and unfortunately, they were bought by a bigger company. We were too small a client for this new company so now we are in the very stressful process of transferring everything to a new company and it has been very, very frustrating and difficult.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My number one piece of advice is to always treat people as you would want someone to treat you or your family. This is true in anything in life. You always have to stay abreast with all of the latest technologies and make sure to handle any problems as promptly as possible.
