Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Leah Barack, founder of Grace Functional Nutrition, located in Portland, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Grace Functional Nutrition (GFN) helps women struggling with hormone imbalances balance their hormones using food and lifestyle interventions so that they can feel better in their bodies and energetically accomplish their goals in life.

Unlike other programs that focus on symptom management and excessive restriction, GFN uses a functional medicine approach to find and address the root cause of imbalances. In this way, women can avoid restriction, nourish both body and mind, and feel confident, healthy, and grounded in their lives.

Tell us about yourself

I have always been passionate about health and nutrition. Once I decided I wanted to pursue this field professionally, I got my master's degree in Human Nutrition & Functional Medicine. I started my own business shortly after that.

My goal is to make every woman feel seen and understood and help them learn to trust their bodies and make healthy choices every day to help them show up as their best selves. I focus on educating and empowering women so that they feel confident in the choices they make every day. I'm also a major foodie and a strong believer that healthy food can be both nourishing and delicious.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Hearing feedback from my clients about how much better they feel in their bodies, how much more energy they have every day, and how much happier they are after making the dietary and lifestyle changes we implement is extremely rewarding for me and a big accomplishment. Helping women become pregnant, especially when they've been struggling for a while to do so, is also high on the list!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Feeling like you're doing it all alone! I'm a solopreneur, which has its pros and cons. Sometimes it would feel nice to have someone else in the business to bounce ideas off of or help give moral support when things aren't going as planned!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Mindset is everything! This affects how you approach your business, clients, marketing, money, and growth and can really make or break you.
  2. Invest in a great business coach (even though it can feel scary!).
  3. Show up as your most authentic self always - run your business in a way that aligns with your truest self. This will resonate with people and will attract the right kind of clients to you.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Entrepreneurship has its ups and downs - sometimes it can feel like whiplash, but it's just part of the journey! I value freedom and flexibility and love being my own boss. It's a journey, and you learn so much about business and yourself, which is invaluable!
