Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jade Martinez, owner of Green Door Holistics, LLC., located in Fort Worth, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the owner of Green Door Holistics, Ayurvedic Medicine. Ayurveda is the oldest form of complementary and alternative medicine for people who are seeking [w]holistic solutions for health and wellbeing. It is also the sister science of Yoga. The fundamental principles of Ayurveda are:

  1. To understand the unique constitution of the individual.
  2. Address the root cause of the disease.
  3. appreciate the intimate connection between the mind, body, and soul.

No one person is alike. Therefore, the approach and protocols to bring balance, harmony, and optimal health for the individual are specifically tailored.

Tell us about yourself

From a very early age, I had a calling to become a doctor. Although, life took me in another direction when I married and had children early. This prompted me to change my course of studies in order to provide for my family. I graduated with a bachelor's in Accounting and a double in Economics. After college, I became an accountant, worked for a government contractor, and spent years climbing the corporate ladder. I even went on and graduated with an MBA with a focus in Finance.

Then, at the age of 35, I thought I had a heart attack. A trip to the emergency room proved that there was no threat of a heart attack, but while in the triage area, he experienced two grand mal seizures. My nervous system went haywire and left him with no sense of feeling on the entire left side of my body. I also experience random, uncontrollable facial tics. Many neurologists and tests later, and without any prior history of seizures, doctors wanted to diagnose me with epilepsy. Prescription drugs, with their side effects, worsened the matter. If allopathic medicine couldn't provide answers and viable solutions, I sought an alternative.

Ayurveda was a foreign word and concept to me. Out of curiosity and to get a better understanding, he enrolled at the California College of Ayurveda. From there, I soon found a practitioner who helped me with my medical challenges. Where allopathic medicine failed me, it was the teachings of Ayurveda that helped me regain my sense of touch and stopped the tics.

I continued on with my studies with the want and drove to share Ayurveda with the vast population that is unaware of its existence. After many years of study and internships, he graduated as a Doctor of Ayurvedic Medicine and started Green Door Holistics in the Fort Worth area.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Helping people achieve their potential to live healthy, balanced, and harmonized lives brings me the greatest sense of fulfillment. Being able to accompany an individual on their wellness journey is an honor.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Time. Owning a business, especially in the start-up phase, takes vast amounts of time. It is challenging to manage that time effectively yet still maintain a work/life balance. Make sure to set time aside for yourself to stay sharp and prevent burnout.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You cannot grow a business alone. Don't be afraid to network and market yourself. Ask for help when you need it. Surround yourself with like-minded people and learn from their experiences.
  2. Value yourself and the services you provide. Whether it's setting prices for your products/services or knowing when to say "no," it can be difficult to stay your ground and believe in what you do. Compromise is sometimes necessary, but don't sell yourself short.
  3. Set goals, but be patient. Not everything goes as planned or on the timeline you want.
