Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Billy Scott, Founder and Owner of Grow Marketing Services, located in San Antonio, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Grow Marketing helps service-based businesses attract more customers online by designing custom websites and driving traffic through Google ads.

Tell us about yourself

I started working as a salesman at the age of 17. I ended up falling in love with sales and helped grow that business to new heights over the next few years. That's where my passion for helping small businesses came from. When I finally decided to branch out on my own, digital marketing was a natural fit. I could use my sales expertise online rather than at a door. The way I design websites and create ads is very different from other people because I am thinking about how I can grab their attention and motivate them to want the service being offered within a few seconds, just like if we were selling at their door. This mindset has allowed us to help many different business increase leads, customers, and revenue. My wife and I make a wonderful duo. Helping businesses grow is our passion!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My favorite is when a client has to call and tell me to pull back on some marketing efforts because they can't keep up with all the work they have. That gives me such satisfaction knowing that I am really helping. Another special moment was when I had a client cry when they saw their new website for the first time. Things like that make all the hard work worth it!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is all the hats that you have to wear. As a business owner, you are the manager, the employee, the customer service rep, the salesman, the accounting department, etc. But the flexibility of being your own boss makes it all worth it!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be picky about your clients! A bad client will cost more time and money in the long run so learn to say no to clients that don't respect your hard work.
  2. Relationships are everything! If you build meaningful relationships with each of your clients, they stick with you during the ups and downs.
  3. Have a waiting list! Once we got busy enough to need to put new clients on a waiting list, we started getting more work. We have kept a 90-day list of new clients for over a year. People trust you more when you are in demand.
