Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bonnie Slykhuis, Co-Founder of H3 Hypnosis, located in Knoxville, IA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We offer hypnotherapy and reiki (energy healing) sessions, certification classes for both reiki and hypnosis, past life regression, along with other educational classes on self-discovery and wellness. Our customers range from children to seniors and seek our services as alternatives to traditional therapies or medicine. We help people overcome depression, anxiety, fears/phobias, and habits and assist them with an array of other life challenges. We also offer past life regression/recall, which allows people to access past life memories.

Tell us about yourself

My younger sister and I realized we had a common interest in hypnosis and decided to get certified in 2009. Over the next several years, we continued to advance our training and use our skills to help others. She uses it in her chiropractic office, and I was using it more and more to help students with test anxiety and employees with other issues at my college, where I worked full time. I was also seeing more clients during evenings and weekends.

So the summer before COVID, I decided to add an 800 sq. ft. office onto my house to see clients. In 2017 our older sister, a retired nurse, became certified in hypnosis and reiki and now works out of my office space as well. I recently (December 2022) retired from my full-time college job, which allows me more time to see clients. Each of us is motivated by helping people, especially those that have tried traditional medical treatments/therapies with little to no success. Watching them leave a session or sessions physically looking and feeling different is rewarding.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to bring a service to the community that benefits people and getting to do this with my sisters!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Starting out and having to be responsible for everything, such as accounting, marketing, development, facilities, etc. Having to spend so much time on the things it takes to "run" a business because you don't always have the means to pay others to do it for you.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start small and work within your budget.
  2. Find people willing to help with the things you are not good at.
  3. Always carry business cards!
