Wrap Happiness Around Your Waist - Hadley Pollet

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Hadley Pollet, a founder, philanthropist, speaker, mentor based in Greenwich, CT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Hadley Pollet is a lifestyle brand consisting of ethically sourced handbags, belts, one-of-a-kind jewelry designs, athletic wear, and apparel. My line speaks to high-spirited and confident women with love for self-expression. I incorporate sustainability, female empowerment, and enriching artisans around the globe by cross-pollinating them through special projects. I personally know every factory the company sources from, who owns it, who partakes in the profits, how they produce products, and, even more importantly, that there are kind, powerful women behind all the hard work who are treated equally to men. My brand is a voice for women who deserve the recognition in this world for their hard work and courage.

Tell us about yourself

My purpose came after 9/11, as I felt propelled to channel the chaos going on politically, economically, and socially into something positive and uplifting. In January 2002, after several years of working in marketing and public relations for textile and fashion companies, I launched my own line of belts made with unique textiles that conveyed hope and happiness. Being able to utilize my creativity every day to honor and give a voice to the artisans is what motivates the most. I'm grateful for the continued opportunities I have to work with women around the world. My business sought out partnerships with women in rural communities in Peru, Taiwan, India, and Kenya. I've visited alpaca farms in the mountains of Peru, collaborating with incredible female farmers and being able to work with a fourth-generation jeweler, making handmade pieces with tools over 100 years old. Connecting with these women artisans while ethically sourcing my business created revenue streams and fulfillment for myself and those I work with.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We have been acknowledged by WWD as one of the top 100 best accessories in the past 100 years. We are loved by style icons, but I really feel my biggest accomplishment is being able to empower underserved artisan communities worldwide through sustainable practices. I wholeheartedly believe that creating positive change and enriching people's lives is why we are here on earth.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

We pride ourselves on working with the best people in the industry. Sometimes it takes patience to find the right people who are both insanely talented, ethical, and kind-hearted.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be patient with yourself. You don't have to have it all figured out to start.
  2. Make sure whatever you do, you're having fun and loving the process while taking into account your role in society and how it will make a difference.
  3. Always work with the best.
