Halo Candle Co. - Chrissy Johnson

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chrissy Johnson, Owner of Halo Candle Co., located in Longview, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Halo Candle Co. is a small business that creates handcrafted candles, wax melts, room sprays, and diffusers. My customer is anyone that wants a safe, quality candle that has a luxe vibe.

Tell us about yourself

Well, my husband and I are both ER nurses; I suppose my candle-making journey began in 2020 during the pandemic. I honestly don’t know why but one night, I looked at my husband and said, “ I think I want to learn to make candles and wax melts.” I know he was thinking oh lord, but he said let’s do it. He has supported me every step of the way. Candle making is NOT a cheap hobby, and I am NOT a creative kinda person. But I was determined to make this work. I researched EVERYTHING there was on candle making and bought a lot of materials. I made my first candle and was impressed at how much I loved it. So the journey began; my dining room was full of candle-making stuff. I soon outgrew my kitchen and built a candle studio. Now I make custom candles for local boutiques and sell them online. My job as an RN is not easy. I chose it to help others, but the burnout is real. Creating and handcrafting candles is a great outlet for me. I love the feeling of creating a great scented candle and sharing that creation with others.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Well, probably learning all the social media applications that come with growing a business. I have never been big into social media, and I still haven’t figured out Tic Tok….lol.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I feel like, for me, the hardest thing has enough time. Since I still work full-time, six days a week, as an ER nurse (in a pandemic), I never have time. Being organized is one of the hardest things for me.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

I would tell new small business owners to research a lot, invest in education, and surround themselves with people that encourage them but are also honest with them.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I hope that one day when I’m candle-making full time, I can help encourage and share with other business owners how to grow their businesses.
