What's your business, and who are your customers?
I run a small website copywriting company, which means I help online entrepreneurs, creatives, and growing businesses update their websites with conversion- and SEO-optimized copy.
Tell us about yourself
I spent a decade in marketing at companies large and small, and I love marketing because it allows me to be both geeky and creative (me in a nutshell). When I left the corporate world to start my own business, I wanted to keep that balance, and conversion copywriting allows me to do just that. I love that I get to dive into customer and business data and then get creative in shaping messaging, voice, and page copy.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I started my business about three months before the pandemic hit. It was a really tough time to grow a business, and I'm proud that I managed to do so while juggling COVID lockdown with economic uncertainty.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Self-motivation and being my own boss. Some days, I need to put on my "boss" hat and tell myself what needs to happen to get it done (it's a bit strange and meta, to say the least!)
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Create goals for yourself and celebrate EVERY win, big and small.
- Stay the course. It takes to figure out what you love and what the market needs.
- Work on time management. It's a big shift to go from being an employee to being an entrepreneur, and time management is everything. Figure out when you work best, and plan your days accordingly. Invest in a PM tool to help keep you (and your team) on track.
