Take Your Healing Into Your Own Hands - Healing Haus

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amy Miller, Founder of Healing Haus, located in Boston, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Healing Haus is where I combine The Work and The Woo to empower clients to take their healing into their own hands. I use modalities like Reiki, Embodiment, Sound Healing, and Coaching to help people transform their lives and deepen their connection to self.

Tell us about yourself

I've always been a helper, it's how my family shows love, and it intrinsically brings me joy. When I went through my own spiritual/healing journey, which resulted from feeling like I was sort of existing but not quite living, I knew I wanted to help others down the same path. I have an insatiable desire for growth and evolution (core values of mine), and I love to continue to share the knowledge and tools that I acquire with others to support their own journeys. What I do at Healing Haus is a culmination of all these aspects of myself that also provides a creative outlet and an opportunity to deeply connect with people, all of which lights me up!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In middle school, we had a career fair, and I remember being absolutely entranced by the people who presented as entrepreneurs - a word I had never heard before, which sounded exotic and exciting! I had always viewed self-employment as something that other people were capable of, but not me. Breaking through that narrative and opening a business of my own has been such a fulfilling process, a growth journey, and a big accomplishment personally.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think anytime we are starting something new; there can be a tendency to look outside ourselves and believe that others know best. While there are certainly beneficial experts, research, and data out there, it's important to remember to filter this information through our inner wisdom and ask if it resonates with us. Otherwise, we could spend so much time doing what we think we "should" be doing that it takes us away from the magic of our authentic expression, which is ultimately what draws the right people and opportunities to us.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. The most important tip, in my opinion, is to just start. Without having the finish line set up, the perfect business cards, or even every offering, you're ever going to have. Your business will evolve over time, as will all these little pieces. If we remain too focused on perfecting these small details, they can become big barriers that delay getting started in the first place. It's better to have an imperfect website and 12 months of experience under your belt than waiting those 12 months until your website feels "finished" for you to begin.
  2. Recognize where your resistance points are - these can often illuminate areas of opportunity for growth within us. Maybe there is resistance to receiving payment for your work, and you feel inclined to give a lot away for free. This is an opportunity to do inner work around receiving so that you can help prevent burnout. Resistance can also come up as we are growing, so consider if that's a signal that you are leaving your comfort zone instead of a cue to stop.
  3. Learning the difference between working ON my business (marketing, creating offerings, seeking collaboration) and working IN my business (client sessions, answering emails, hosting workshops) really helped me find a way to distribute my time, energy, and effort to invest in both in a balanced way.
