Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Torok-Gerard, Owner of Healthy Transitions Coaching, LLC., located in Akron, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have a health coaching and personal training business. My strength and conditioning program is tailored toward endurance athletes, but I work with clients of all ability levels. I also work with those who are not training for any specific sports but want to achieve general fitness through resistance training.

Tell us about yourself

I am also a professor, and in 2013, I ran my first ultra trail marathon while doing research on the motivational orientations and self-regulated behaviors of endurance runners. As someone who was not an athlete during high school or college, I never perceived myself as athletic. My own 50k training allowed me to discover my athletic abilities, and it was a very empowering experience. I wanted to help other people determine and set their own goals that would lead them to create more fulfilling lives. This is what motivates me in my work as a health coach and personal trainer.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Preparing my clients to successfully set goals for and complete events, including an IronMan 70.3, physical assessments for the military, and fitness competitions that blend conditioning and Strongman events.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I think that one of the challenges I have found is recruiting clients. My coaching/training is currently a side business, so finding a good balance between recruiting and maintaining my other responsibilities has been a learning experience.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be patient.
  2. Be persistent.
  3. Be authentic.
  4. Give yourself grace.
  5. Set practical, scalable goals for growth.
