Powering a Better Way of Working - Hemsley Fraser

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ben Clarke, Chief Revenue Officer of Hemsley Fraser, located in Washington, DC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We provide learning and support services to large corporates to help their staff grow and be better able to achieve their organization's strategic vision.

Tell us about yourself

I've been with HF for almost 20 years. I have seen the company evolve into what it is today, the leading global learning partnership provider. I'm incredibly motivated by seeing how far we've come and how we continually develop our proposition to meet the ever-changing needs of our clients. And of course, HF has helped me grow personally, and I'm so proud to be in a leadership position. I have a say in how our business continues to grow.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have led our US business for the last four years and achieved double-digit growth every year. And now, I've been promoted to Chief Revenue Officer for the global Group and look forward to helping the rest of our business grow similarly.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Realizing that the adage "leaders eat last" is true. Being a senior leader is humbling, challenging, and often very tough, and you don't always see that when you're coming up through an organization. With that said, I also count myself lucky to work for such a progressive and supportive company, so I'm excited about the future and looking forward to tackling the challenges head-on.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Be kind! We're all in this together, and if you can help make someone's day better while doing a good job, everyone wins!

Never delay tough decisions. As a leader, it's your job to make the calls no one else can or wants to make, but procrastinating, while easy, is always a bad idea.

Focus on profit and cash flow. Growth is addictive and is way too easy to grow too quickly, which can be ruinous. Be brave but always sensible, and take financial advice at every turn!
