Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nigel O'Quinn, Founder & CEO of Higher Healths USA, located in Columbia Falls, MT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We provide encapsulated grass-fed, grass-finished beef organs to make it easy and convenient to get the most nutrient-dense foods back into your diet for optimal health. Our customers are proactive advocates for their health and folks looking to make changes from inferior synthetic forms of vitamins and minerals.

Tell us about yourself

As a Functional Nutritionist, I always lost the battle trying to get my clients to eat whole-animal when it came to organ meats, and the last straw was my wife. We were planning on starting a family, and as weird as it might sound, it was a non-negotiable for me. She needed to eat the most nutrient-dense foods possible to get her body ready and to provide the best support possible for the baby. There was no way to cook it well enough for her to ignore the taste, smell, or texture, so I encapsulated the organ meat, and it was a home run. After that, I started testing on more friends and family, and when they asked for more, I knew this had to be something I helped even more people with.

What motivates me is having a high-quality life with a passion for whatever it is you do. With poor nutrition comes poor health. It's a state that I don't wish upon anyone. Our foods have changed so many lives because real food works. I need more people to feel what real nutrition does.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Sticking to my values and making sure it's a brand name people can trust to feed even their kids. I have had, and continue to have, many opportunities to save money and cut corners like any business, but I refuse to compromise my products in any way and need people to be able to rely on Higher Healths for the highest quality possible.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Listening to your gut. There is a lot of noise, and many people have ideas for what you "need to do."

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

This is a hard one because I don't feel at all qualified to be giving out tips on this topic, considering there are much much better experts with much larger businesses than I have built. However, I would say,

  1. Be passionate about what it is you choose to do.
  2. Get clear on how small or large you want it to become.
  3. Make sure it is needed in the marketplace.
