Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lee Elias, Owner of Hockey Wraparound, located in Philadelphia, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Hockey Wraparound exists to make the game of hockey more accessible. Our flagship product, the hockey wraparound, is a tool that hockey players can use on their expensive hockey sticks that allows them to use them outside on any surface without the fear of damaging their blade. Our newest product, the Drystick, is a portable gear-drying tool that attaches directly to a hockey stick. Last year we also released a children's book titled, "When Hockey Stops," which tells the story of a young player that deals with the adversity of missing a season due to injury and how mental fitness plays a role in being successful. In addition, we also were awarded the Top Hockey Podcast of 2022 via the Sports Podcast Awards for our show "Our Kids Play Hockey," which is recorded at our headquarters in PA. Our ideal customers are youth hockey families.

Tell us about yourself

I've been involved with hockey for most of my life. Whether playing, coaching, or in business, I'm thankful for the opportunity to work in the game every day. I'm motivated by my team and the creative collaboration that it takes to make something successful. The thought that we get to strive towards a common goal together is something I take massive pride in. It has led me to create GameSevenGroup.com, which houses my written works, public speaking, podcasts, and team-building work.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

While being an inventor and team leader is a blessing, I take a lot of pride in being a job creator. I never take for granted that the members of my team (and our fanbase) are what allow us to be successful.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The ebbs and flows and keeping an even head. Some years will be very good, others will not be. Staying the course and keeping a present mindset is essential through the highs and the lows if you want to survive.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Timing is everything. Make sure you have a solution that people need now.
  2. People are everything. You must surround yourself with good people that fill your gaps.
  3. Trust is everything. If you aren't earning the trust of your consumer, you won't be around long.
