Where Active Lives Leads to Active Minds - Homeschool Sports

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in sports education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jake Lauret, Founder of Homeschool Sports, located in Magnolia, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

With Homeschool Sports, our mission is to get kids outside and active. We want kids to find a sport they like and play it for a lifetime! With our program, we are non-competitive, and we teach the athletes the skills, rules, and fundamentals of the sport we are focusing on. We want a fun environment for the kids to learn and enjoy playing, no matter their skill level.

Tell us about yourself

I started Homeschool Sports because I have always loved sports. After graduating with my PE degree for SUU (Southern Utah University), I moved to Texas and became a PE teacher. After being in the school system for several years, a homeschooling mom asked if I would be willing to coach her kids. I said YES! I started this Homeschool Sports because I saw a need that needed to be filled for the homeschool community!

I love servicing the homeschool community! The families are wonderful and kind. They are what keep me going! It is also fun to be able to teach the kids how to play the sport and support them in this way. I've been playing sports since I was 4 years old, and playing and coaching sports is a great way for me to be active and engaged in an industry I love.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is providing a needed service for the community. From day 1 of launching, I have been profitable, which has been a great blessing. My revenue and enrollment have increased with each school year. Also, I get to do what I love, and Monday-Friday is never burdensome with my line of work!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing for me as a business owner is taking the risk of hiring and expanding. Also, taxes. Those things are always on my mind, and the what-ifs are frightening to think about if things go wrong.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Print out a business plan template and fill it out.
  2. Register your business and open up your business checking account.
  3. Start creating flyers on Canva and use social media for marketing your brand's products/services.
