Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joel Runyon, Founder of IMPOSSIBLE ®, located in Austin, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My company is IMPOSSIBLE ® - it's a performance-focused fitness and lifestyle brand dedicated to asking you the question - "who could you be if you pushed your limits and tried to do what you think is impossible?"

Tell us about yourself

I started Impossible as a blog to document my journey and try to do the impossible. I scaled it into a series of tools, resources, and products to help other people push their limits and try to do the impossible. Part of what motivates me is the fact that I spent so much time telling myself that everything was impossible that I pre-disqualified myself from so many experiences over the years.  I want to try to squeeze the juice out of life as much as I possibly can, and part of that is trying to knock off and expand my impossible list every single day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Running an ultra marathon on every continent (https://777.impossiblehq.com)

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The minutiae are boring but required. I didn't start a business to deal with accountants and lawyers, but they're a pretty big part of the whole thing. I think this can really trip up some small business owners who have idealistic views of the world and then are brought down to earth quickly when they have to deal with the nuts + bolts of the business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start now. You don't have to quit your job to start playing around with ideas. Start testing out ideas today and see what sticks.
  2. Try to make revenue as soon as possible. Lots of people get distracted with vanity metrics. In the end - it comes down to revenue. You can get a lot of attention, but if that doesn't turn into revenue - you have a very time-consuming hobby.
  3. Try to enjoy the process. Business can eat up your entire life. And, while it's stressful (and should be), don't forget to (try) enjoy the journey along the way.
