Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in digital marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Molly Baker, Founder & CEO of Indie Consulting, located in Raleigh, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Indie Consulting is a boutique digital marketing agency. We are a 'one-stop shop' for all things marketing consulting to execution. We base our work on our four main business goals of Brand Building, Growth Marketing, Marketing Transformation, and Marketing Operations. With these teams, we work on custom, empathetic, data-driven designed scopes to help our clients accomplish their business goals.

Tell us about yourself

After graduating from Villanova University, I started my marketing career with a passion for supporting and helping clients. At the age of 27, I decided I wanted to start my own consultancy that redefined the traditional agency/consultancy models by building a remote team to diversify perspectives and backgrounds who would be willing to take a hands-on approach to strategy-led services. Four years later, my team has experienced consecutive +150% year-over-year growth. Throughout this growth, I still am motivated in my day-to-day through working with great clients who are looking to learn and grow along with us!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment with Indie Consulting is the team I have built. We are all constantly learning, growing, and improving in the environment/daily structure of our individual choice.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing that comes with being a business owner is never knowing what challenges and opportunities are around the next corner. It's impossible to always be prepared, which can be very unsettling at times. Goals are great, but plans are useless.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The top three tips I would give anyone looking to start a company that is focused on growth:

  1. To create a work environment and culture that you yourself would like to work in.
  2. Hire people you can trust- whether this is day-to-day tasks, client services, or internal operations.
  3. Have fun with it. The beauty of entrepreneurship is that the world really is your oyster.
