Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jaylyn Bernachi, Owner of innerswim, located in Amherstburg, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

innerswim is a holistic wellness platform that serves women who are looking to reconnect with their living body wisdom.

Tell us about yourself

I first began teaching yoga in 2016. The mind-body connection that I experienced through yoga was healing me mentally and spiritually at the time, and I haven't stopped since. I didn't know that yoga was going to take me down the path of women's work, but each day I am motivated to serve others because the same practices have served and supported my own life so deeply.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner so far is the creation of the innerswim online platform. I'm pretty proud of it, and I hear from others how nurturing the space feels. I love that anyone can find this work on the web and that the virtual door is always open to access healing.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is getting started. It's super overwhelming to know where to start and how to start. But once the ball starts rolling, everything starts to come together and grow together. But the hardest part is always starting, and I think we have to start and restart many times as business owners. We have to be willing to pivot and find new directions, and that takes some adaptability and grace!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start by focusing on your own well-being and physical strength. It's amazing the way a healthy, empowered body fuels us to do the work we need to do in the world. It's necessary to be well to show up for others.
  2. Learn as many skills as you can to grow. Whether that's marketing, graphic design, or skills in your field, just keep learning. We never stop learning; the more knowledge you have, the more confident you'll be in your work.
  3. Find a community of supportive people. These could be other people in your field, people doing similar work, or just a group of friends you can really lean on. Having a support system is absolutely key to your well-being and growth. Otherwise, running a business can feel isolating and scary.
