Stop Yo-Yo Dieting for Good - Jackie Porter

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jackie Porter, Founder of Jackie Porter Health, located in San Diego, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a behavioral scientist and health coach that helps working women stop yo-yo dieting for good.

Tell us about yourself

After the pandemic hit, I had a lot of time to reflect on my life and realized that despite doing all the right things to be healthy, I was always exhausted. I was waking up at 5 am every morning to go to Crossfit, eating overnights oats while sitting in traffic on my way to work, lugging around 3 different bags at work with clothes, food for the day, and my computer—all so I could feel like I was mastering work-life balance. Needless to say, nothing about this way of living was sustainable. I was constantly irritable, always sore, heavily caffeinated, and ultimately burned myself out more than a few times in one year. In thinking about all the extreme steps I took just to be 'healthy', I started realizing why so many working women struggle to be both successful at work and in life. Usually it's just one or the other. What I was doing was not sustainable—and on the other end of the spectrum, I was seeing women I work with give up on their health completely. This left me wondering how any career woman could possibly be healthy and still be successful at her job. This was my ah-ha moment! I talk about the pendulum swing, yo-yo dieting and all-or-nothing mentality all the time. There's hardly anyone that's figured out how to live in the middle. There's no one that's truly mastering work-life balance. This was the start of Jackie Porter Health. Today, I can proudly say that I no longer wake up at 5 am, I sure as hell don't eat overnight oats in my car, and I'll never lug around 3 bags at work again. I now help busy working women find sustainable ways to be healthy so they don't burn out.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Investing in myself. I've always been good at this, and I think that's why I never stop growing.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Focus. There's so much information out there that it's hard to determine what should be a priority. To me, it all feels important, so I really have to channel my behavioral science background and break these massive goals down into smaller milestones that help me feel like I'm making progress and getting small wins every day.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Talk to people who are doing what you want to do.
  2. Experiment fast, and don't fall in love with your solutions.
  3. Write down your goal and break it down into small milestones.
