Massage Therapists & Spa Coach - Jamerie Michalek

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jamerie Michalek, Founder of Massage Therapists & Spa Coach, located in Long Beach, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Massage Therapist & Spa Coach is based on the belief that going solo doesn’t mean that you have to go through the entrepreneurial journey alone. I offer 1:1 coaching to help Massage Therapists start their journey of starting their own business. Share the industry standards, best practices, and how to work best with their current skill set and circumstances.

Tell us about yourself

Before I started being a Massage & Spa Business Coach, I was a manager of a massage franchise. During the interviews with Massage Therapist employee prospects, I would ask, “What is your five-year plan?” Many of them would respond that the next step was to open their own business, rent a space, or start a wellness center. With being a manager, there are only so many ways to support each Massage Therapists’ individual needs while also prioritizing the business’s needs.

My mission has always included helping people, but I had always known and felt when my reach began to bottleneck. This indicator helped me move through various roles in my career.

Ten years ago, I started as a Massage Therapist and then moved on to lead massage therapist, spa manager, clinic business manager, and multi-unit manager. Who I help has shifted over the years; I used to help anyone who needed a massage. Now I help Massage Therapists become better business owners and run their businesses with confidence and strategy.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is to have coaching clients that no longer need my help because they are leaning into their business intuition, are applying what I have taught them, and have successful massage and skincare businesses.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is being patient, trusting the process, and staying focused on the big picture goal. There are so many distractions and unsolicited advice we receive from well-intentioned loved ones, but it can push us out of alignment, and we have to trust in our business intuition, our business strategy, and moving in our purpose.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your “why” and feel it. It needs to be so big and scary that it propels you forward on your toughest days.
  2. Decide that you are ready to start and commit to starting. Plan, prepare, and start. Don’t delay. Start now.
  3. Be grateful and thankful for today but plan, build, and think about where your business will be in 5 - 10 years.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Make sure to document your journey and celebrate all wins, big and small. One day you’ll look back and be amazed at how far you’ve come. This journey goes so fast and slow at the same time. Sometimes progress looks like leaps, and sometimes progress takes a very long time with small incremental growth that is huge but doesn’t look huge at the moment. Make sure you have proof for yourself that you are “doing it” and are succeeding!
