Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jamilla Phillip, Founder of Jam's Cakes, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Jam's Cakes is an online academy for bakers and baking business owners. Our mission is to provide bakers with a variety of learning resources to build and grow their own baking businesses. We are committed to providing quality classes to all baking and business levels. We strive to create a supportive learning environment where bakers can develop their creativity and grow.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Jamilla Phillip. I started my Jam's Cakes business after discovering my passion for decorating cakes and creating art you can eat! After realizing that I don't want to spend my life in a kitchen, I decided to expand my cake decorating business into a digital product academy. I've helped over 2000 bakers and cake decorators take their businesses to the next level. I love sharing business resources with those who are interested in turning their baking business into six-figure careers. I think it's important to get paid for your skills.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishments include being featured in Cake Masters Magazine, Food Network, and Cooking Channel. It's a passion of mine to share what I can do with the world, so I'm super proud of how far I've come in the baking world.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things for me is knowing when to take breaks. I'm passionate about cake decorating and teaching others how to do it - so much so that it doesn't feel like work. However, I've learned that working 24/7 leads to burnout - quick!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Give yourself grace. It's exciting to turn your passion into profit, but remember this, just because it doesn't feel like work doesn't mean you should keep running without breaks - we're not machines.
  2. Don't forget to stay organized with your money. It can be easy to get caught up in making income; just ensure you have a financial plan. Remember to separate business bank accounts from personal bank accounts. Never mix the two!
  3. Consistency really IS key! Your business will continue to be successful when you remain consistent. It can be easy to give up when things get tough - but when you stop - so will your money!
