GCWHSS - Jen Brooks

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jen Brooks, Founder of The Global Community of Women in High School Sports, located in Saint Louis, MO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is The Global Community of Women in High School Sports (GCWHSS). We are an inclusive community, but we primarily serve female high school Athletic Directors, Coaches, and those aspiring to be.

Tell us about yourself

I have been a high school athletic director for 26 years. I got tired of being the only woman in the room because I work in the world of high school sports. I had enough of being boxed out of certain spaces because I am a female. I reached out to the national organization that houses high school sports and asked if they could create a space specifically for female athletic directors, and they told me no. So I created the space and thus was born the GCWHSS. I am motivated every day to be a voice for women in sports to create space at the table for women and assist other women in their journey in high school sports, be it a student-athlete, coach, another athletic director, or educate our allies on how they can help.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I was recently selected as one of the top 25 women in business by the St. Louis Business Journal.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I am a high school athletic director who has never trained or worked in the business world, so learning everything on my own with no formal education in the world of business has been the biggest challenge.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find people you trust and ask them questions.
  2. Find people you trust and have them partner/work with you.
  3. If you are passionate about what you are doing, all of the hard work is worth it.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I present to various organizations "The Power of Being the Only Woman in the Room" through my other business, jenbrooks.com.
