Creative Selves - Jennifer Cunningham Art

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jennifer Cunningham, Artist, based in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I teach fine art to all ages. My classes for elementary school-age children are very popular. Painting Parties for grown-ups are successful as well.

Tell us about yourself

I’ve been an artist all my life. When I had children, I started teaching at their schools. They grew up, and I missed having kids in my life. I went to Mar Vista Elementary, and the principal said I’ve got kids that you can teach art to. And that started my career as an Art teacher!

I love kids, and I love art. Knowing that I am giving children a creative outlet keeps me going every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The Soho House, a private club for people in the entertainment industry, called me up one day and said we’d like you to teach every Saturday.

One week he’ll go to Malibu, and the next, West Hollywood. Their members were wonderful people, and they loved learning to paint with me.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The unreliable aspect of my business is the hardest thing. One year is money, money money, and the next is not so much money. Of course, Covid has a lot to do with that right now.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Hire someone to help you with marketing.
  2. Have a passion for the importance of what you’re doing.
  3. Remain open to new ideas and learn new ways of doing things.
