Urban Float University Place - Jessie Puryear

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health & wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jessie Puryear, Founder of Urban Float University Place, located in University Place, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Urban Float is a wellness and self-care business that specializes in Float Therapy. We also offer an infrared sauna, red light therapy, and BEMER (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy). Our customers are those looking for holistic alternatives to pharmaceuticals to relieve stress, anxiety, PTSD, and chronic pain.

Tell us about yourself

I was first introduced to floating towards the end of my Naval career. Once I did it, I was hooked. I felt it was an incredible tool for stress relief and chronic pain, which I suffered from in abundance. Once I retired from the Navy, my goal was to open a float center.

At the time, there were limited facilities that offered to float. I love to see the before and after with our clients. With floating, the transformation is instantaneous. People are amazed at how relaxed they feel. Even the skeptics are often surprised.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Surviving COVID! The pandemic made us look hard at our business model and allowed us to pivot into other wellness modalities. We reviewed our pricing structure and made changes there too. The fact we survived and are thriving is a huge accomplishment to me.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think the one thing is that you are never truly off. You are it; the buck stops with you, so a considerable sacrifice occurs with family and free time that isn't always obvious when you decide to start your own business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Are you ready to be always available initially, especially for a brick-and-mortar business? There are always issues that need to be handled.
  2. Is your family on board? They must support you 110% and your dream and plans. Do they understand the time commitment you are getting ready to partake in?
  3. Value and overcompensate your best employees. Your great employees who believe in your business and are willing to do anything to help you succeed are worth their weight in gold.
