Metal Building Resources - Johnny Brokken

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Johnny Brokken, CEO of Metal Building Resources, located in Denver, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

MBR is a turn-key prefabricated metal building contractor. We assist with design, sourcing the building, site work, concrete, erecting the building, siding, roofing, and insulation.

Our customers are in need of a warehouse, industrial, or even residential metal building and would like one point of contact for all the trades needed to build their building.

Tell us about yourself

I am a philanthropic entrepreneur and a Dad. My degree is in architecture, and I flipped 130+ houses in the Denver area, which gave me solid experience and understanding of what the metal building industry needed when I came across the opportunity to start MBR a year ago. I saw the need for a "one-stop shop" for metal buildings, and as an Entrepreneur, I saw the benefit to my clients and a viable business, so I launched MBR.

I am motivated each day by the opportunity to lead and serve my staff and our clients. We are in the process of each team member selecting a charity they would like to support, and a portion of our profits will be donated in my staff's name.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is being able to bring staff together and build an amazing culture where we all support each other on a business and personal level. We are like a family.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner, in my opinion, is having other people and families depending on your leadership. To lead them personally, to lead the team culture & work environment, and to lead the company to profitability so that everyone gets paid.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do market research so that you understand the industry and can find a way to bring value to the industry.
  2. Surround yourself with mentors and join at least one mastermind to get "outside eyes" and help find your "blind spots."
  3. Know your numbers... have outstanding financial systems and a functioning proforma.
