Inspiring a New Era of Recruitment - Jordana Matsos

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in staffing and recruiting but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jordana Matsos, Founder of Hirequity Recruitment Agency Inc., located in Hamilton, On, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a search group sourcing Sales and Marketing talent in Canada and the USA. We specialize in hiring for Sales and Marketing leaders, for startup and medium organizations with DEI philosophies. Our clients range from healthcare to software and supply chain, manufacturing, and everything in between!

Tell us about yourself

I took responsibility of sales teams in a 25-year corporate career. I hired, trained, and coached countless candidates to be leaders in sales. Candidates and mentees responded positively to my transparent, down-to-earth style and the emphasis I place on culture and making meaningful connections. At the same time, repeatedly seeing the same shortcomings (discrimination, lackluster experiences for candidates) in the recruiting process was deeply frustrating. With the experience of making an impact on candidates and the conviction to effect change, I founded Hirequity. My motto is "You always have a choice." This informed my decision to start Hirequity rather than accept the old way of doing business. It applies equally to every person, as staying with one company "for life" becomes increasingly uncommon. Some candidates' career paths wind in more directions than others. At Hirequity, that is never viewed as a sign of unreliability or a lack of commitment. Whatever your background, Hirequity will judge you only based on your grit, courage, and determination to make a positive impact. I support diverse workplace hiring initiatives and am a proud member of the LGBTQ2+ community.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Scaling the business and seeing the impact we have made on organizations. Starting on my own in my bedroom to hiring a team, renting out office space, and building a strong network of candidates is an accomplishments that I don't take lightly. Whenever we source a candidate that calls us to say, "Thank you so much, you've changed my life," you feel as though you've made an impact!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Spending your time wisely. No one else will care about your time as much as you do. There are countless things that I have spent time and energy on that I wish I hadn't. From engaging in conversations with people who had no intention of doing business with me to wasting time watching demos of tools, I didn't need. Protect your time!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Delegate or use a third party for the things that you aren't good at or don't have time for, but need to do.
  2. Build a network. You are always going to be pitching, so think about how to position yourself or your business in less than 60 seconds.
  3. Don't waste your time on unnecessary tools, conversations, or meetings. You can't work all day every day, so manage your time appropriately.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Recruitment Agencies and Search Groups of the past have built their business on relationships. That part hasn't changed, but what has is who is doing the hiring. As a younger generation moves into Leadership roles, they are thinking about hiring differently. This is one of the reasons why they are becoming popular in the SMB space. They are willing to take more risks to get their hiring needs met rather than doing the same thing the same way. I expect that in the next 5 years, with more immigration and an aging workforce, hiring is going to drastically change! It's exciting.
