Passionately Translating Your Ideas Into Gold - Joshua Lutz

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joshua Lutz, Creative Director of Lutz Multimedia, located in Nutley, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Lutz Multimedia is a unique creative Web Design and Audio Engineering Agency serving the NYC and northern NJ area. Our customers have been Virgin, T-Mobile, Small business owners, and artists like Al Green, D'Angelo, Joss Stone, and Lil Wayne.

Tell us about yourself

Since I was three years old, I knew I wanted to be an artist. It was never a question. I was commissioned to paint 12 paintings for a local Mexican restaurant and design their website as a teenager. I instantly realized I could do this for a living. After two degrees and a whirlwind internship in Manhattan, NYC, I knew I had what it takes to work with the very best in the world. I built my LLC in 2016 and never looked back. I absolutely love what I do and am completely in love with both visual design and audio production.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My favorite job I've done to date was painting giant murals for multi-platinum artist Joss Stone for her album "Introducing Joss Stone." I spent three weeks with her painting murals all over NYC. I got to meet some pretty amazing people like Aretha Franklin, Common, Rafael Sidique, and more on that very special project.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a business owner, I am in charge of proposal writing, chasing down open invoices, drumming up a new business, doing all the work, and outsourcing to the RIGHT people at the right times. Each job is totally different, and you never know what will hit you, but I have never had a job that I didn't enjoy and learn from, even the hardest ones.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Put yourself in as many opportunities to fail as possible. THAT is growth. THAT is experience.
  2. Know when to say no. You don't want every job. Especially the ones that are too good to be true.
  3. Know your strengths. Ironman doesn't shoot Hawkeye's bow; that's not his superpower. The best team is made up of superheroes using only their own superpowers to make a super team!
