Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kat Burris, Founder of Kat B Nutrition, located in San Diego, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) and have a private practice where I counsel clients to optimize their health through nutrition. Each client's nutrition goal looks a little different, from weight loss and managing a medical condition to wanting to feel more energized! I work with each client one-on-one to customize a unique nutrition plan to reach their goals.

Tell us about yourself

Becoming an RDN was a second career for me. I have been working in the luxury hospitality industry for more than a decade, but in my free time, I love to cook, garden, and research different nutrition topics. I discovered my love for healing the body through food! I thought, "Why am I not pursuing my REAL passion?!" Creating new healthy recipes, sharing nutrition tips, and hearing success stories from my clients motivates me daily to continue my nutrition education path.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is growing my business by word of mouth. The biggest compliment you can receive is when a past client recommends a friend or family member to you. I am so grateful for my clients who share their success stories and want others to achieve their nutrition goals as well.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things as a business owner is being a "jack of all trades." I am great at working with and counseling clients on nutrition topics, but I had to work hard on mastering sales, marketing, website design, and the accounting side of the business. Making mistakes is sometimes the best way to learn!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Use your network. Tap into your connections and ask them to spread the word about your business.
  2. Gather data. Your business goals should be measurable, e.i. the number of clients, downloads, and website visits. Look at your data regularly to track and see your growth or areas to improve.
  3. Be consistent! There will be ups and downs when growing your business, but the key is to provide high-quality service consistently and to every client.
