What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Certified Fitness Trainer and Certified Life Coach, delighting healthy and happy hearts since 2002. I am a Corporate Wellness Consultant, and I work with others as a motivational speaker, fitness coach, and life coach who coaches having a growth mindset, healthy habits, and fitness, all from a sports psychology perspective.

Tell us about yourself

I love how fitness changes lives. I started on this journey in Water Aerobics in the late nineties after my youngest son was born. I fell in love with the older adult population. In 2000 I became certified as a water aerobics instructor. In 2002 I became a Certified Fitness Trainer. In 2004 I became a Specialist in Senior Fitness, and then in 2006, I became certified to work with athletes. In 2012 I began working with the CEO of OCuSOFT, and in January 2013, I became the Corporate Wellness and Fitness Director at OCuSOFT, which is one of the top workplaces in Houston and has been since 2011.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In 2008 I opened a studio where I utilized passive exercise to help those who are totally paralyzed and accident victims. In 2013 I became the corporate wellness and fitness director at OCuSOFT. After the pandemic, I returned to a gym that was empty. I revamped and remodeled the gym and created a functional fitness facility. Today I have taken wellness usage from 1% of the entire campus to 15% and rising. In February 2023, I opened a consulting business that will now branch out to offer services to other corporations in the Houston area and online.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I would have to say that one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is to focus. I strive to focus every single day. Being involved in fitness has helped me with that, though. I wake up every day inspired to change others' lives. It is not always easy, but I love what I do, and that is what counts.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get a mentor and a coach. If that mentor has a proven mastermind, even better. You will need support.
  2. Always look at failures as opportunities because that is exactly what they are.
  3. Stay open to pivot. This will help you find those skills and capabilities to move outside your comfort zone and move to bigger and better things.
