Nature Inspired Jewels - Katie Poterala Jewelry

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewelry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Katie Poterala, Founder of Katie Poterala Jewelry, located in Greenville, SC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Katie Poterala Jewelry is an artisan fine jewelry company that makes authentic, nature-inspired jewels for the adventurous.

Tell us about yourself

I was first exposed to jewelry in a special high school program and was hooked on the techniques. While still in graduate school, I started my own jewelry business. I began showing work in galleries at this time and making production and one-of-a-kind pieces as well as private commissions. Upon graduation, I moved the business with me back home to Greenville, SC, where it exists today. Currently, I operate Katie Poterala Jewelry and co-own MAKE MADE Jewelry, an artisan gallery, and studio in downtown Greenville, SC.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I find a lot of personal reward in working one on one with clients and sharing the joy and intimacy that comes with a special one-of-a-kind piece or a redesign of precious heirlooms. I feel accomplished that I have been able to make my passion my career and that I am able to help support my family through something I love.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Juggling the commitments of personal life and work is a challenge for any small business owner, and I'm no different. It's critical for me to be able to preserve and prioritize wellness and family alongside my business. I have a tendency to overwork myself and have been known to take on too much-- so I try to set hard boundaries in order not to do. Balancing work and home life is a priority.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. It's never too late.
  2. Know as much as you can, but also know that you don't have to know it all but be open to learning and committed to hard work.
  3. Be sure you are pursuing a business for the right reasons, and have realistic and logical goals. It's better to be pleasantly surprised by successes than let down by unrealistic expectations.
