Flawless Faces Makeup Artistry - Kelly Bey-Borden

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and cosmetics but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kelly Bey-Borden, Owner of Flawless Faces Makeup Artistry, located in Elkridge, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am in the business of beauty! But the beauty I teach is from the inside out! No matter if I am teaching a makeup class, mentoring a group of young folks, speaking on a panel, purchasing cosmetics from our line, or if someone is simply in my chair to have a makeup service, we have deep conversations. I love to get to know my customers, how they learned about me, a history of their skin/routines, and a bit about them. I like to attract customers who are life-long, not ones who simply want makeup done. I have customers from ALL walks of life, and I couldn't imagine having it any other way. My customers range from older to younger, conservative to liberal, different ethnicities/races, and different genders.

Tell us about yourself

I have been in love with the art of beauty and how it can transform a person since I was in my pre-teen years. The art of makeup has been a passion of mine for a very long time! My son is seeing me thrive has always been a huge motivation for me. However, when a customer tells me how I made them feel after having a makeover, after using my cosmetics, or just a talk…that motivates me to continue doing what I do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has to be staying consistent and relevant if over 2-decades! Business ownership is not for the weak, and if you do not have a strong foundation, faith, and support system, it's easy to fail. Starting my cosmetic line in 2015 after years of working for big names cosmetics companies like M.A.C. It was a huge accomplishment for me. There are so many accomplishments, but the last one that I will mention is feeling the love from my community!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is the rough times when business is not "booming"! COVID was a rough time for many business owners when the business came to a stop; as business owners, we have to quickly pivot and figure out how to keep money coming in.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Focus on how to make yourself visible!
  2. Network and find your tribe of people to hold you accountable and motivated.
  3. Be patient but keep pushing! Success does not come overnight, but as you stay consistent, it will pay off.
  4. Lastly, be kind and remember your path!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I love doing these kinds of interviews and giving as much info as I can to upcoming business owners in and out of the beauty community. Business ownership is hard, and having mentors and the voices of people to ask for advice is so important.
