Music is Within Us - Kenny Thames Music Enterprise

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kenneth Thames, Founder of Kenny Thames Music Enterprise, located in Phoenix, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the founder/owner of Kenny Thames Academy of Music, a division of Kenny Thames Music Enterprise. As a professional pianist, I have been active in providing music for country clubs, restaurants, hotels, casinos, and private events for 25 years in the Valley. As a teacher, I have been teaching in the valley for 28 years and have taught an estimated 1,100 students in my career of private instruction.

Tell us about yourself

I retired from pastoral ministry at a church that I founded. I wanted to pursue my true passion, that of playing music and teaching others to reach their goal as musicians. As a result, some of my students have become musical instructors and musicians in their own right. My youngest student is four, and my oldest student is 86 years young.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

On a personal level, I do what I love and feel I am purposed to do. Bring music into the lives of all people. I cannot express the feeling of accomplishment to hear one of my students or former students performing. I especially delight when seniors learn to play music! Many think they are too aged to learn, but I have learned that music is within us, regardless of age.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

In my business, I thought I wouldn't necessarily consider it hard; it is planning for the "lean: times. Summers in Arizona call for people to get out of the heat. As a result, my income usually decreases considerably, but I plan for it and welcome everyone home in the fall.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Pursue your passion.
  2. Dedicate yourself to diligence and persistence, especially in the first few months of launching your business.
  3. Don't forget YOU! Take time to relax, enjoy, and create!]ooo]oo]]o]o]]
