Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kerry Campion, Founder of God Save the SERP, located in Valladolid, CL, Spain.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a fractional SEO content marketer for SaaS companies that build solutions for Creators. That means I help companies create the right type of content that helps them connect, convert and retain their customers.

Tell us about yourself

I started my own business because I moved country while pregnant. I was already working freelance as an English-as-a-second-language teacher, but the move and the pregnancy felt like the right time to make a change. I started launching an English language learning blog and podcast but soon became more enamored with marketing than teaching! I decided to retrain as a copywriter and content marketer and now get to help amazing businesses every day as part of their marketing team. I'm motivated by the act of creation, making something out of nothing like building a brand and finding new ways to push my creative abilities to serve my clients.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Probably not giving up! Running a business is hard, and I'm very proud of the fact that I've committed to not giving up, to forever learning and working on my personal development. I'm also proud of launching my online course, SERP Slayer, for copywriters who want to niche down into SEO copywriting. I had a lot of doubts and hesitations about launching but seeing the overwhelmingly positive response from our students fills me with joy.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The constant decision-making. I feel like there is always a conveyor belt of decisions rushing past me. Sometimes all you want is to say to someone, "Here, you deal with this," but often, we can't do that.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know whose advice is worth taking. I'm very stubborn with advice, and it's served me well. Some well-meaning people have tried to put me off certain ventures in my business, but I didn't listen, and it worked out well. Don't take advice from someone who hasn't gone on a similar journey.
  2. Get comfortable with numbers. As a creative, numbers are not my strong suit. But as a business owner, not understanding your numbers and finances is what will ultimately crush you. Learn enough to be dangerous and invest in an accountant who can advise you on your finances.
  3. Learn a little of everything. We all want to get to a stage of outsourcing and delegating. Still, it's so important that you understand what you are delegating. In the SEO world, I've heard horror stories of clients being completely scammed by SEO agencies because they didn't have the knowledge to understand they were being scammed. You have to learn about everything that touches your business.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Don't dive in without savings or another source of income. Building a business slowly but sustainably is better than quitting your job with 0 savings and ending up crashing and burning due to financial strain.
