Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kathleen Dollar, Owner of Khava Unlimited LLC., located in Riverdale, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I offer several - voice-overs, fitness, and music. My customers range from people who want an audiobook done or commercial spots to students who attend my yoga classes (on Tuesdays and Thursdays) or people who come listen to my band Krimson Khava.

Tell us about yourself

I have done voice-over work (IVR, commercial spots, etc.) for many years for the company I currently work for, and I decided to branch out and start a side business voicing audiobooks and venturing into the gaming industry. Also, I love to help others heal. I am a Certified Personal and Group Fitness Instructor—I decided to add yoga to help people relieve stress and increase mental health wellness. As for music, I have a passion for connecting with others and find that music is a universal language.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

To actually get started!! Once I got my website and started "putting myself out there," so to speak, and being consistent with it, people started showing interest. I'd say landing my first audiobook was a big step this year.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Juggling a current 9-5 without letting either side slip. People often think you have to "dive in" and completely let go of your current 9-5, but I disagree. Getting a regular check helps tremendously with not having to worry about finances while I grow my business, and it also helps me to not compromise the integrity of my work just to get clients.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find two to three things you are good at—select one that you are good at and that you can use as a full-time job.
  2. Depending on how easy and how quickly you can become a subject matter expert on your second passion, use your spare time to grow it as a business.
  3. If you can have both passions (or three) be in the same field vicinity—even better. This will help you grow simultaneously.
