Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health supplements but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alisa Pospekhova, founder and CEO of kindroot, located in Seal Beach, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At kindroot, we believe that supplements should be fun and accessible! Formulated by an herbalist and a candy hall-of-fame scientist, we make a line of nurturing slow-melting lozenges that blend herbs and aromatic flavors together and help support sleep, mood, immunity, and focus. We are an independently owned business manufacturing in the USA from organic ingredients.

Tell us about yourself

I've had immunity issues my whole life - I was that person catching every cold going around the office. Finally, in my 30s, I started really looking at natural ways of healing myself and discovered the wonderful world of plants and herbal remedies. But many of them were pretty bitter or cumbersome to take, so I decided to create a supplement that people would actually look forward to taking - one that would be beneficial and nurturing and delicious. Today, hearing positive feedback from our customers gets me going! I am so touched hearing how kindroot helps them in their day-to-day lives.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am really proud of myself for being able to solve problems continuously and push through obstacles. After over 20 factories told me that my product was "impossible" to make, I hired a scientist and figured out how to make it by hand in my own production facility. I now take the same attitude to everything I do. I truly believe every problem has a solution if you truly apply your motivation to it!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

At the end of the day, everything is on you. I have wonderful people around me, helping me and inspiring me, but when things go wrong, entrepreneurship can feel really isolating. For me, having a strong community of female business owners has been the key support in helping me get through the tough times.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you truly know your "why." There will be days when you are struggling with motivation, and this will be what keeps you going.
  2. Shut off negativity and noise. There will be lots of people telling you why you are going to fail - find those who will help you succeed.
  3. Find a community. Having other business owners to collaborate with or to vent to will keep to your success.
