One-Stop-Shop to Recovery - Kinetic Edge

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joanna Taylor, owner of Kinetic Edge, located in Ottawa, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Six years ago, I opened Kinetic Edge Health Group with the intent of providing patients with the best sports-oriented therapy. We are a multidisciplinary clinic offering chiropractic, massage, and physiotherapy. Our providers are certified in advanced techniques, including Graston, Neurofunctional acupuncture, dry needling, and shockwave therapy. Myself and Kelly Salvador recently opened an addition to the clinic, which is an athletic recovery studio. RecoverRX is a recovery studio offering all the services you would find in a professional locker room to help athletes recover quicker from their training and injuries. These services include Normatec Compression, Game Ready Cryotherapy, Infrared Sauna, and NuCalm. NuCalm is a treatment that uses binaural beats and gaba to down-regulate the sympathetic nervous system and promote relaxation.

Tell us about yourself

Sports and training have always been an important part of my life. In high school, small injuries started popping up due to overtraining. Our family chiropractor was excellent at treating athletic injuries, which inspired me to get into the profession. I opened my own business because I had a vision for how I wanted to serve members of the community. My patients motivate me to keep on top of the latest best practices and techniques so that I can get them back to doing what they love.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is growing the clinic into an all-encompassing, multidisciplinary team. We are a one-stop shop for massage, chiropractic, physio, and recovery.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about owning a business is hiring and training an office administrator. This is an extremely important role as they are the first impression of the clinic. I spend a lot of time interviewing for this position, and we are lucky to have an amazing admin staff.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Keep your overhead as low as possible when starting out. You can add additional expenses as you grow.
  2. Invest in training your office administrators so that your business runs smoothly.
  3. Hire slow and make sure that the people you are hiring share the same values and culture of your business.
