Art and Learning - Kitchen Table Classroom

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jodi Burgholder, Owner of Kitchen Table Classroom LLC., located in Butler, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Kitchen Table Classroom, my website, provides resources for parents and teachers to engage kids in creativity. I offer many free lessons and printable resources as well as more comprehensive digital curriculum that makes it easy for anyone to give their kids quality art experiences.

Tell us about yourself

Prior to having kids, I was an art teacher and then an Education Director at our local art center. After being home with my kids for a few years, I was really missing the element of creativity in my life. Starting my own website filled that need as well as re-inspired my love of learning new things. I'm a single woman operation at this point. I love the freedom and independence of working in this way. While I know I could possibly grow faster and bigger by hiring more help, I love the way I work right now and wouldn't change a thing.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to contribute financially to my family while maintaining a flexible schedule has really been wonderful. I've learned so much in so many areas and certainly grown more confident in my own abilities because of my business. Hearing from parents and teachers about how they use my resources and lessons is always a bright spot as well!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I have learned a lot about myself in the past five years of growing my business. I am a "starter" rather than a "maintainer." I love a challenge. I love learning new things. I'm easily bored, and I can struggle with following through with more routine tasks.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start something today. Don't think too hard; just start.
  2. Allow your business to grow and change as you learn more about what you have to offer and what your target audience really needs.
  3. Assume that you have something worthwhile to offer. Someone out there needs what you have.
