We Build Brand Ecosystems - KMC Digital

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kalen Arreola, Founder of KMC Digital, located in North Kingstown, RI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our team helps purpose-driven organizations and entrepreneurs grow through branded digital ecosystems. These assets are designed to convert new users and revitalize any older lists of customers or clients that have not been in contact in a while. We focus on long-term growth over time, with organic being a large part of what we do.

Tell us about yourself

When I became a mother, I was serving in the military full-time for the U.S. Army Reserve. It didn't take long for me to realize that a military lifestyle would be tough. However, it became even more difficult after my divorce. At that point, I decided I would go all-in on my business, and 12 years later, I'm still doing work that I love. I am now motivated by client successes. The clients we work with are literally changing the world with the work they do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I guess I could cite our monthly revenue as an accomplishment, but I think any business that grows over time will increase in profitability. The short answer is helping people stay in business through the work we do and hearing that people we've helped are thriving years after we worked with them.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Juggling client expectations, hiring a great team that gels well, and making time for myself. I'm learning how to work a little every day, so I can enjoy the rest of my time doing things I enjoy.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Test your idea before dumping thousands into a website or program. Every business owner I have ever met thinks their product or service is amazing but never thought to consider if other people (the market) would pay for it. I've seen thousands blown on things that should not have happened.
  2. If you have done your research, you know the market needs what you have to offer - develop a plan and optimize the message and approach. Don't keep switching things up so much that you are coming across as confused and unorganized.
  3. Hire fast and fire faster. Some are not a cultural fit, and keeping folks on board who are not "on board" with the team is only going to cause stress and pain for all involved.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Don't quit when it gets hard, and stay humble enough to go wait tables if you have a rough month. I have gone back to work at a regular part-time job many times during this journey, and now our sales are incredibly predictable.
