Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jack Joseph, creator of Komunity Kombucha, located in Chicago, IL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are Komunity Kombucha. A project that focuses on the cultivation and distribution of fermented beverages infused with adaptogens, nootropics, and nervines. Our customers are made up of restaurants, nightclubs, bars, coffee shops, grocery stores, health food stores, and beer breweries. Komunity Kombucha is more than a product. We are a mission-based brand that is focused on making non-alcoholic beverages more accessible in social settings. We grew frustrated with the lack of beverage options when going out to eat and felt that it was time for a revolution... and we are going to lead it!

Tell us about yourself

I first started working on this business because I identified a need for non-alcoholic beverages in restaurants, nightclubs, and bars. More and more people are consuming less alcohol every year, but we still want to fit in and have something to sip on! As somebody who is super passionate about electronic dance music, I get annoyed when the only n/a beverage options at festivals/concerts are red bull or water for $7-$8. Why not offer something that is refreshing, energizing, and nourishing for the mind, body, and spirit? Especially since the majority of people there are spiritual and care about their health! So long story short, the dance music community is my motivation. There needs to be a change, and we're going to make it.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is making a product that people enjoy and love. I can't even begin to tell you how many times people say, "we don't like kombucha, but love yours!" It's all the love that we put into creating these products. It's the people. It's the energy... and we're proud!!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Zooming out and looking at the business with an unbiased bird's eye view. When you're unable to do this, it's difficult to recognize the success that you've created, and when you can't identify that, it is unmotivating to persist.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Surround yourself with quality people.
  2. Don't think too much... follow your heart and dream. Have a mission and vision.
  3. Just start!
