Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kyo Pang, Owner of Kopitiam Inc, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Malaysian restaurant that specializes in traditional Baba Nyonya cuisine. Our customers are mostly local and based in the community.

Tell us about yourself

I'm the 3rd generation of Nyonya in my family. My family had their own restaurant in Malaysia for approximately 50 years. I guess it is my personality that I like the challenge that I face every day. It's always easy to start something new, but it was never easy to maintain. Hence, whenever I'm able to complete a tough task, I feel accomplished, and that motivates me to move further.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I was able to introduce the New York crowd about traditional Malaysian food that was very underrepresented.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The inflation, unexpected market change, and also staff management.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Be prepared, believe in your passion, and be patient with the obstacles you face.
