Website Copywriter for Client-based Businesses - Krista Walsh

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Krista Walsh, Owner of Krista Walsh Copywriting, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run a website strategy, copywriting, and SEO agency. We help client-based businesses clearly convey their vision and value on their website — and turn their websites into lead-generating machines!

Tell us about yourself

My company has come a long way from where I started. Initially, I was a part-time freelancer doing anything related to writing while I taught English in Madrid. One of my first gigs was ghostwriting cozy mystery novels for a mass-market book publisher. Over the years, I narrowed my focus and became an expert at what I most enjoyed: Website copywriting. I added SEO, website strategy, and customer research into my skillset... and Krista Walsh Copywriting was born.

Ultimately, what motivates me is the freedom and agency that comes with working for yourself. I love creating every day for myself — and creating a life with intention. I'm looking forward to growing my company and stepping into a CEO role in the coming years.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

This is hard to say. On the one hand, it's a big accomplishment to live comfortably in Los Angeles on an income I pay myself — from a company I created from nothing. On the other hand, I always feel accomplished when I see other newer copywriters and creatives using me as an example of what's possible for THEM. A great life, on their own terms.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Hands down, the most challenging part of being a business owner is the mindset work you HAVE to do to be successful, trust yourself, and live outside of what we've been told is the only path to security (e.g., working for a big company in a 9-5). But the mindset work and personal development journey I've gone on has also been incredibly rewarding and enriched my personal life just as much as my professional life.

I used to be someone with very low self-esteem. But through running a business, it suddenly became more urgent to address underlying negative beliefs and work through past experiences. As a result, not only has my confidence as a business owner improved, my relationships are healthier, my self-talk is kinder, and I feel more secure.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Honestly, I tell everyone who's interested in running a business (especially a creative business) to find some way to work through their internal conflicts and confidence issues, whether that's through therapy, life coaching, using resources on your own, or whatever works for them.

It's so hard to run a business when you don't fully trust and love yourself, and you can't admit what you actually want. (Believe me, I've been there.) There is so much practical advice out there for starting a business that I don't think I can add anything to that conversation. But all the practical advice in the world won't help you if you secretly think you're unworthy of success.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

If anyone's interested in running a copywriting business like mine, I offer low-cost consultations where you can pick my brain about anything — your niche, what to offer, what to charge, your website, how to find clients, and more.
