Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brian Kukan, Founder of Kukan Reiki Kai, located in North Hollywood, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Kukan Reiki Kai is my healing center. I provide Reiki treatments, teach Traditional Japanese Reiki classes, offer Hypnotherapy services, and give Numerology Readings. I work with those that are seeking inner peace and understanding, as well as stress relief and healing. I have a lot of customers that are cancer patients and survivors through two cancer support non-profits I work with in Sherman Oaks and Beverly Hills, and my Reiki students range from absolute beginners to experienced Reiki Masters.

Tell us about yourself

I started down the path of the healing arts in 2007 when I was going through a difficult time in my life, facing an impending divorce and feeling uncertain about my future. After regularly attending meditation classes, I heard about Reiki, and it peaked my interest. I immediately bought a Reiki book to learn more about it. As soon as the opportunity arose, I registered for a class. Fast forward 5 years, and I was studying to be a Reiki Master and diving into the field of hypnosis as well. With an inner knowing that this work was my calling, I resigned from my 13-year career as a high school math teacher to pursue a new path. But of course, I couldn't get away from numbers because Numerology appeared in my sight, and so I had to add that to my quest.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment was proving to myself that I could make a living doing what I love and that I wouldn't have to go back to being a classroom teacher.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It's all on me. If I want clients, I have to reach out in some way for people to see me and book appointments. If I don't put in the effort, I don't get any work.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make a plan. I was lucky enough to have been taught to make a business plan in my first Reiki Master training. Those that are spiritual and metaphysical service providers are not always business-minded, and so if you know you are not that, start learning.
  2. Outsource what you can to others that do it well. We all spend time getting better at different skills, but if you find there is something that you never do well or that you don't enjoy doing, pay someone else to do it for you.
  3. Prepare for taxes and document everything. Automatically put money aside each month for that tax burden that will come around, and learn how to pay estimated taxes throughout the year. Find a method to document your income and expenses that works for you and keeps it as simple as possible.
