What's your business, and who are your customers?
Our business is Back2Nature Wellness and Adventures. We offer guided outdoor wellness adventures, including Stand-up Paddleboard experiences in the spring, summer, and fall and Sauna Experiences in the winter. Our customers are those who are seeking an Inner Journey in the Outdoors. We promote cultivating a connection with self in nature; therefore, our customers seek a time to slow down and relax so that they can connect more fully with themselves.
Tell us about yourself
I had worked as a Wildlife Biologist for the past 16 years and loved what I did, mostly because I was able to enjoy the outdoors and spend time immersed in nature. After having my two boys, I found myself wanting to stay closer to home and not traveling doing field work outdoors, but I was still craving the outdoors and adventure. Just before I birthed my oldest son, I immersed myself in the realm of consciousness and personal development, adding another passion to my plate. Since I was craving more outdoor adventure in my life, I decided to begin a women's outdoor group where I offered free outdoor experiences just to connect with other women in the outdoors. Then, I saw the value in offering outdoor experiences focused on cultivating self-awareness and increasing the connection with ourselves in the outdoors and began to curate experiences to focus on that! Soon, I found myself applying for grants to assist with equipment purchases. In 2022 I fully dove into my business full-time to offer outdoor wellness experiences! What motivates me each day is watching the personal transformation of each person that joins us on an outdoor experience. They may arrive at the experience a bit tired and stressed, but as the experience evolves, they start to unwind, and they leave with a smile on their face. Knowing that I'm able to provide people the space and time to relax, unwind and connect more fully with themself keeps me going each day!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is to be able to offer these outdoor wellness experiences following a really hard time that our collective society has just gone through. Being able to offer these outdoor wellness experiences at a time that is most needed has been really rewarding. I look forward to continuing to use my creativity to allow more and more people to experience the solitude of nature on a guided experience.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner, especially a new business owner, is wearing all the hats and trying to figure out how to run an efficient and profitable business. Luckily I have had amazing support from the tourism industry, including Tourism Saskatchewan and Discover Saskatoon; they have provided so many resources that I've been able to access to make sure that my business is in a place of sustainability, efficiency, and profitability.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
The top three tips I would give someone looking to start, run and grow a business today would be to ensure that you're able to catch your mindset when it starts to surface limiting thoughts and beliefs. Having tools in your pocket to be able to catch yourself when you spiral is key! Also, having support so that you are not having to do everything yourself and wear all the hats will keep you sane! And most importantly, make sure that what you are doing lights you up, creates magic in your world, and that you have fun!
