Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in consultancy but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lacy Showalter, Owner and CEO of LNS Accounting & Business Consultants, located in Kansas City, MO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is LNS Accounting & Business Consultants. I am an accountant with a Master's degree in Accounting and over ten years of experience. I help business owners organize their accounting records, run payroll, file taxes, and guide them toward their business goals.

Tell us about yourself

I knew I wanted to create my own business from the beginning of my college career while simultaneously creating financial freedom and a flexible schedule.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have been able to take stressful, unknown situations and make them easier to understand for my clients. Being able to explain in regular jargon what happened to get them in these situations, along with explaining how to get out of these situations, is crucial to building client/accountant trust.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is the ebb and flow of business. It's never steady work, but either you're swamped or have nothing going on. There seems to be no happy medium.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

If I were to give tips to anyone looking to start a business, they would include...

  1. If you don't know about something that needs to be done for your company, hire someone to do it for you. You are good at the service or sales of a product, not all the technical behind the scene stuff. So rather than wasting time, just hire someone who knows what they're doing.
  2. When it feels like you want to throw the towel in, just put on blinders and keep grinding. The work you put in now will allow you to reap the rewards later. The first three years of the business are the hardest.
  3. Customer service is never dead. Treat your customers (both internal and external) like you would your favorite family member. They will tell others, and word-of-mouth referrals are like gold.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

When beginning a business, you start with a vision. Don't lose that vision; remain focused, and your goals will be achieved.
