What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a website designer who specializes in WordPress. I work with fellow solopreneurs who have taken their side hustle to a full-time gig. Who have expanded their reach and are either service-based entrepreneurs or own and operate an online store with digital products. As a fellow teacher, I work primarily with teachers who have a side hustle reselling their curriculum, but I also work with a mass amount of woman-owned businesses looking for a partner in the process of getting eyes on their website.

Tell us about yourself

As I mentioned above, I used to be a teacher who started a blog and designed it myself. That grew the interest of others, and I started designing blogs (and sites) for other teachers in the same field as me. This all started happening eight years ago. One year in, I decided to take it full-time and stop juggling two full-time positions (my business and teaching), and I haven't looked back since. I still am able to support teacher authors in their online journeys, but now I get to work with tons of other woman solopreneurs looking to show up authentically online.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Scaling my business from being a side hustle to a full-time gig and tripling my yearly income compared to being a teacher. Finding joy in being able to still work with people I can relate to but in a more creative way by building unique websites and having the flexibility of owning my own business!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The ebb and flow of running your own service-based business. Some months are super busy, where I'm booked out for months on end, and then some months are slower. It's really hard to make sure you don't seep into that imposter syndrome when things are slower. This year I've been battling that but focusing my energy on building passive income products that my clients need!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just start - seriously, just do it. Even if you spend 30 minutes a day on it for three years, just get started and don't look back.
  2. Listen to your audience/community - If you keep getting the same question or see the same things from your community that they are considering a pain point, build a product or service around that.
  3. Know that every day counts - even if you make a small step or a huge one, trust your gut and give it all you have. Trust that you are in the right place with your business and take those slow times and turn them into fixing your business, creating new products, or adjusting services to better fit the world we live in today.
